About The Book: Looking at culture through the lens of gender is of recent inclusion though there are burgeoning researches and oeuvre of literature on the cultures of north–east of India. This book analyses the Tangkhul culture through the prism of gender. A comprehensive account on gender enculturation is presented in this book taking note of the pervasive values that are streamlined for each gender in the cultural milieu. This is an exploration on the roots of how gender is tailored to children, laying the foundation from the concept of sex prediction of an unborn child till adolescent stage. The whole process of gendered enculturation by adults through verbal and non-verbal means and the ways of internalizing the values by children is summarized in the book. The transition from oral tradition of socialization to the contemporary situation is also presented in the book with analysis on the replication of gender values. About The Author: Rv. Khanchuila studied Anthropology for her Master’s degree and Ph. D on the topic ‘Gender Relations among the Tangkhuls of Manipur’ at North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. She worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Manipur University, Canchipur under Post-Doctoral Fellowship for Women, University Grant Commission, New Delhi and took up a research on ‘Differences in Gendered Division of Labour: A Comparative Study of the Four Tangkhul Regions’. She has presented papers on Gender Studies in International and National Seminars, and also published articles on the same. She has also undertaken a research project on ‘Empowerment of Tribal Women for Sustainable Development’ and collaborated as researcher in a documentary film ‘Kungyee’, both the projects sponsored by Tribal Research Institute, Imphal, Ministry of Tribal Tribal Affairs, Government of India, New Delhi.
